SAVANNAH, Georgia USA — Wiley and Janet are so pleased to have hosted international traveler and writer Fred Marvila of Sundaycooks, Brazil! He loves Savannah and Wiley’s Championship BBQ! We are happy to share snippets from his picture-packed, expansive article, “Falling in love with Savannah“.
Here is Senhor Marvila’s introduction. [Of course, some of the real magic of writing gets lost in a Google translation from Portugese to English. For that we apologize to Fred!]
“Savannah is one of those cities where you fall in love at first sight. Squares and nature everywhere; houses and buildings that seem to have stopped in time; that air of old that lets anyone nostalgic ; all contributed to the first capital of Georgia was considered one of the most beautiful cities in America by Condé Nast, The New York Times and other specialized media.”
Skipping to words about Wiley’s Championship BBQ, here in the preface!
“The place you can not let go when visiting Savannah is the Wiley ‘s Championship BBQ (4700 Highway 80 East Savannah, GA) . Wiley and his wife Janet are typical of the southern US barbecues since 1983 and I can say that without doubt was where I had one of the best barbecues today….”
Please, hurry back to see us for more barbecue ribs and pulled pork, Fred Marvila! [Yes, we will knowingly embarrass ourselves with this Portugese effort via Google Translate: Por favor, volte logo para nos ver para mais reforços do assado e carne de porco desfiada, Fred Marvila!]

Press Release: Award-winning Wiley’s Championship BBQ Announces Savannah Restaurant’s Expansion of Americana-rich Space, Barbecue Menu, and Brand Personality
SAVANNAH, GA (December 2, 2015) – Growth spurs one Americana-rich mom-and-pop restaurant in coastal Georgia to go against the trend. Celebrated for its award-winning slow-smoked barbecue and ribs, Wiley’s Championship BBQ’s unveiled Q4 2015 expansions in its Americana-rich restaurant space, barbecue menu, and brand personality.
In the popular barbecue restaurant in Savannah, Georgia USA, Wiley’s Championship BBQ is enlarged to spaciously seat 60. Wiley and Janet McCrary reveal new menu and character-rich additions just in time for 2015 holiday travelers and bigger-capacity for family-and-friends dining.
During the 2015 New York City press industry event, Visit Savannah, Savannah’s tourism destination marketing firm, served and showcased Wiley’s award-winning barbecue.
In addition to great southern barbecue, the popular Savannah eatery delivers two out of three promises from a vintage rail advertising slogan: “Sleep Well, Eat Well, Enjoy Your Journey”.
“Deliciousness — stated in Wiley’s shorthand “Hot Q. Cold Brew.” — is always our number one focus. When doubling our restaurant size we’ve added spaciousness and more entertainment on the walls, including Wiley’s meaningful train memorabilia,” announces Janet McCrary, the logistics partner at the little barbecue joint on Whitemarsh Island near Savannah.
“Savannah architect Roy Ogletree brought another important layer of America’s great spirit of preservation to our project. Roy salvaged 110 year-old, heart of pine (2” thick) lumber from a home in Wilmington Island. In addition to designing the space and directing the construction, he used the hardy lumber to build his designs for the communal table, bar and beer-barrel table tops,” Janet adds. The creative idea for the table design was found on Pinterest.
Sam Huff of BBQ1 in Atlanta, GA and WileyMcCrary, two fierce competitors from the Professional BBQ Circuit, have teamed up to present an Advanced BBQ Class which will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at Captain Butler’s Retreat in Savannah, GA! This beautiful waterfront retreat is the perfect setting for this amazing opportunity. This is an all day class and BBQ will be served throughout the day as we study the different cuts of meat and their preparation. To our knowledge, never before has a comprehensive class on BBQ been offered here in Savannah.
Sam and Wiley plan to share the recipes, techniques and secrets that have set them apart from their competitors. In this “nothing held back” class the following areas will be addressed: recipes, food safety, resources, techniques, grilling vs. smoking, types of wood, etc. Sam owns one of the leading BBQ restaurants in Atlanta Sam’s BBQ1 located in East Cobb and has spawned three other successful BBQ joints in the greater Atlanta area. Wiley recently attended Sam’s class in Atlanta and he can’t stop talking about how good it was! This class is geared for the serious BBQer…either backyard and/or competitor and is for someone who really enjoys BBQ and wants to learn how to do it right!
$250 per person
Space is limited.
Special pricing is available to participants of this class from the Thunderbird Inn.
You have a rate of $69 Sun – Thurs and $99 Fri-Sat. The code is BBQ101.
Voted “Best Savannah Barbecue” (2010 and 2011) in the Savannah Magazine and Connect Savannah polls, AND “Best Barbecue Ribs” (2011), Wiley’s Championship BBQ restaurant in Savannah, GA offers ideas for barbecue take out or eat in to Savannah and Tybee vacation goers.
We think Wiley’s BBQ is the answer to your questions of “Where to eat near Tybee Island?” or “Where to eat in Savannah? ‘The Barbecue General’ aka Wiley McCrary says, “Eat BBQ here!” From his end-of-the bar perch at the barbecue restaurant and at barbecue cooking classes he preaches, too, the gospel of barbecue.
